We used Native Instruments software extensively when we produced Rio (Pass the Baton) ft. CSS, Simon Le bon and John Taylor, as it integrates well with all the analog instruments that we use.
For the drum programming we used Battery, where we layered, pitched and filtered the sounds using the internal processing. For John Taylor’s bass we used Driver to add depth and fatness with a touch of overdrive.
We love this plug-in - it’s definitely one our go to tools for beefing up and adding character to tracks. We also used it for processing some of the guitars played by CSS. For the horns, Nick Wood used Session Horns Pro to sketch out the arrangement, even leaving some layers to subtly ‘sweeten’ the parts played by Chris Tedesco in the final mix down. For the guitar riff in the breaks we wanted to give a nod to the original, and Guitar Rig came up trumps with a preset that transported us straight back to the 80’s with a vibe of over the top hair, pastel suits and make up, go NI YOU ROCK!
The final mix was completed at Syn's Tokyo studio, using the Neve Genesis desk, where we had outboard inserts of the Fairchild 670 compressor for vocals, Neve 1081 EQ’s on drums, guitar and bass and everything was clocked from the Antelope master clock.
I first started using Native Instrument when the very first KOMPLETE was released in 2003. The moment I started jammin’ out with those sounds, I knew that these were what I would be using all the time.
With our recent arrangement we did for Duran Duran’s Rio project, some of my favorite sounds that I used were from the NI Komplete bundle. My arrangement was a samba dance remix and I used a lot of the groovy percussion from the NI Cuba. All the authentic loops, flexibility of sounds and performance was precisely what I needed.
For the brass section, The NI Session Horn Pro sound was exactly what I was looking for. Using the section presents, it was a breeze to change, select and preview the sounds until I could hone in on just what I needed. For the bass sounds, I used a mixture of Scarbee MM-Bass Amped and Guitar Rig to get the punchy groove of the samba dance track. I was planning on recording live bass afterwards, but the Scarbee going through Guitar Rig, sounded so good, I realized that was the sound I was looking for.
I started using NI sounds as a high school kid just getting into music; and I continue to use them as a professional composer at Syn. I could defiantly say that Native Instrument was always a key tool for me growing up as a musician. Thanks Native Instruments, and I am definitely looking forward to the next generation of KOMPLETE sounds!

Syn had the pleasure of working with Mercedes-Benz on this global campaign for the new E-Class. Syn LA’s Al Wolovitch composed the music and created the sound design that perfectly captures the concept of intuitive driving and essence of man vs. machine. The rest of the Syn team in Tokyo and Los Angeles created the sound design that helped glue the music and the striking imagery together.
